Shamus the Sheep goes Walkabout - Part 2
Goodbye Scotland, hello New York !
It was quite sad leaving Islay and saying goodbye to my friends and family in the flock but my friend Ewen kept us all cheery. Here is a picture of the ferry that took us from Islay to the mainland. The start of a very long journey.
It took us seven hours to fly from Edinburgh to New York. New York is on the East coast of America, see if you can find it on a map of your own. It was very nice to get our four hooves back on the ground again! We have all decided that sheep do not fly well. Ewan felt particularly woolly when we took off and landed. Have you ever seen a green faced sheep?
New York is nothing like Edinburgh or Glasgow. The airport is very close to the city and as the plane comes into land the first thing you notice are all the skyscrapers. Most of them are all squashed onto an island called Manhattan, but there are no beaches or farms on this island! This is the picture I took as we flew in, pretty impressive don't you think?
New York is famous for many things, some describe it as the city that never sleeps. They are right, it is so noisy. Everything is open 24 hours, cinemas, supermarkets, even the restaurants.
On our first day we climbed to the top of the Empire State Building. It has 86 floors and stands at 381 metres. It was built in 1931 and unbelievably only took one year and 45 days to build. It took 4000 men to build four and a half stories a week!
Here is a picture of me at the top. Ewan didn't quite make it all the way. I think he ate too many hotdogs while we were waiting in the queue.
To be honest I don't really like heights but somebody had to get to the top to get their photo taken. You can see for 40 miles from the top. That is almost the same distance from Edinburgh to Glasgow! The Empire State building is the tallest building any of the flock have ever climbed up. We were wondering what the tallest building in the World was. Maybe you could do an internet search to find out.
In the afternoon we went for a picnic in Central Park. This is a huge park right in the middle of the city. You can see it in the picture from the top of the Empire State Building. People use it for picnics, walking, there is even a small zoo in the centre. We of course spent the afternoon munching on the lovely green grass and looking for Joey, Chandler, Rachel and the rest of the gang from Friends. Ewen and I couldn't find Central Park anywhere. When we eventually asked the locals we were slightly embarrassed when we discovered that Friends is in fact filmed in Los Angeles which is on the other side of America!!!SM © MMV
